About The Author
Jay Wakefield (1943) is a well-respected zoologist whose varied career experience extends from being a newsletter and book editor through to property management. His interest in megalithic art and prehistory was aroused as a child by the exciting writings of Thor Heyerdahl. His father, Richard, set the stage for his lifetime journey into archaeology with an inspiring high school graduation address in 1932, The Antiquity of Man in North America, which established an enduring bond of father-son literary exploration and archaeological adventure. Their numerous coastal and offshore sailing experiences have greatly enhanced their research efforts.
For four years now, J.S. Wakefield and Reinoud have worked hard to complete this manuscript referencing much material, sourced for each author from opposite ends of the globe. Most of this material is published here for the first time in English. The authors would especially like to take the opportunity of expressing their deepest gratitude to those that came before them, in particular to Mrs. E. Shee Twohig whose magnificent out-of-print catalogue of European petroglyphs is indispensable; her figures have been frequently cited in this study. They are also grateful to acknowledge Dr. Gerard F. IJzereef, Professor of Archaeology at the University of Amsterdam for his support to which they are the most grateful.
Through the data retrieved from these important sites, slowly the intellect and achievements of prehistoric humans are opening up to us. This work opens doors toward a broader understanding of this rich tapestry of stories and legends that punctuate the latter historical period. There is much yet to be seen, both in literature and in the field. We warmly welcome your insights and suggestions. Feel free to reach us at our email addresses.
